What’s My Purpose?
You've probably tried to answer this question more than once. Maybe in a quiet moment, maybe after something hard, maybe when someone you respect asked it of you and you didn't have an answer that felt true. It's the question that doesn't go away.
We don't believe purpose is something you find. We believe it's what emerges when you understand what lights you up — and claim it as your own.
Why most purpose tests don't work
Most quizzes that promise to reveal your purpose do one of two things. They give you an archetype ("you're a Mountain Guide!") that feels good for an afternoon and tells you nothing the next morning. Or they give you abstract advice ("follow your passion") that you already know and haven't been able to act on.
Neither helps, because they skip the actual work. The actual work has three parts, and any one alone is incomplete:
What lights you up. Not what you say lights you up, or what you've been told should — but what your attention actually does when no one's watching. Where you spend your energy. What you reach for when you have a free hour.
What you value. Not the values you'd list in a job interview — the ones you'd refuse to trade away. Values reveal themselves in tradeoffs, not affirmations. What would you give up so something else could exist?
The lens you're looking through. The hardest layer, because it's invisible by definition. Everyone operates with a default frame — assumptions about how the world works, what's possible, what counts as a problem. Most of us never see our own, because we're looking through it, not at it. But your frame determines which values you can even perceive, and which lights you can even see to be drawn to.
Purpose lives where these three layers connect. Once they're visible, purpose stops being a thing you search for. It becomes something you recognize as already true about you — and decide, with your eyes open, to claim.
What Shine Your Light does
Shine Your Light is YurLight's flagship instrument — for people tired of quizzes that flatter them and purpose advice that flattens them. It's a single deep assessment that surfaces all three layers, in order, from the surface down.
- Layer 1: What you're drawn to. Observable patterns — what you spend attention on when nothing is forcing the question.
- Layer 2: What you care about. Tradeoff-based questions that reveal the values you actually hold, not the ones you've been trained to claim.
- Layer 3: How you see. Scenario-based questions designed to surface your default frame — the lens shaping what you perceive and treat as obvious.
What you get back isn't a label. It's a report — written about you, by what we call The Mirror — that reflects you back to yourself, including the parts you haven't named. It ends with a synthesis: not "your purpose is X," but how your three layers connect for you specifically, a few experiments to try this month, and how to tell whether what you're claiming is actually growing in your life.
A quiet note on authenticity
Behind this work is a frame that shapes how the report is written. We think authenticity isn't just being honest — it's becoming aware of the pretenses, the inherited frames and absorbed assumptions we've been pressed into without noticing, that block our actual selves from being expressed.
And we think there's a particular kind of value that points toward purpose. Not the values that serve only you — the ones you'd want for everyone. If you value freedom, that's something; if you value freedom for all, that's something else. The second tends to be closer to purpose. The report is built to surface both — the pretenses in the way, and the values that point outward.

It isn't a verdict. We will never tell you what your purpose is, what to do with your life, or who to be. Those questions belong to you; our job is to reflect them back clearly enough that you can answer them yourself.
It isn't clinical, and it isn't fixed — your frame, your values, what lights you up all change over time, especially after big life events. And it isn't fast. Real self-understanding takes time; the report can compress a lot of it, but it can't substitute for the lived work of testing what you've learned.
